Kathy Walter by the Window

In 1969 National Geographic asked me to do a story on some people called Hutterites who lived in colonies in Montana, South Dakota, and in three provinces of Canada. One of the first colonies I visited and asked permission to document their way of life was the Spring Creek Hutterite colony located near Lewistown, Montana, pretty much in the center of the state. Kathy was one of the children of the colony boss, Paul Walter. I got to know Paul and many of the other colony members quite well and also at the Surprise Creek colony near Stanford, Montana.

Over the years some of the Hutterites, especially those among the Walter families became like a second family to me. In this picture of Kathy the highlight of her eye seen between her hands as she braids her hair is critical to the composition and the feeling of the light. Over the years I’m sure my Hutterite friends would wonder why, if I ever showed up without a camera on my shoulder or around my neck. And they’ve always accepted me as a friend who just happens to be a photographer.
