Regatta on the Grand Canal

$100.00

As part of my annual flash sale, I am offering this signed print at $100 for a three week period beginning October 1st and ending on October 31st at 11:59 pm (EST).

This image is from my very first trip to Italy in 1969 to make pictures of Venice for a National Geographic book. On the day of the annual most important regatta on the Grand Canal I had arranged to photograph from the window of someone’s apartment overlooking a wide sweeping curve in the canal. I decided to use a special wide angle camera I then owned to make the image. The camera was a Zeiss Hologon Ultra Wide with a fixed 15 mm lens. I’d received the camera earlier that year as a prize for winning the White House Photographer of the Year Award. As a regular contributor to National Geographic Magazine I was a member of the White House Photographers Association although I never really worked in the White House itself.

In this image we see a flowing procession of colorful gondolas on the famous waters of that beautiful city with people observing from balconies on the ancient stone and brick textured buildings. The image is reminiscent of a miniature painting although, of course, it is a photograph.

The camera I used was stolen from me later that year while walking along a street somewhere in Saigon, grabbed from my hand by a youngster riding behind his buddy on one of the zillions of motor scooters buzzing the streets and roads of South Vietnam. I was disappointed to have the camera stolen but can’t say I really missed it. Not then and not now. I’ve never really been an ultra wide-angle photographer.

This flash sale print is a 6” x 9” image on a 9” x 11” paper. It is an archival ink jet print on archival watercolor paper. It is signed in graphite pencil on the front border.
